SWIMMING SUCCESS 2012!
On Friday 30th March, 28 Longlevens pupils took to the GL1 pool for the annual Primary Schools Swimming Gala. LJS fielded a strong squad of swimmers to compete against 10 other primary schools from across Gloucester including our close rivals Elmbridge Junior.
As champions for the past two years, there was a lot of pressure on LJS to hold onto our title! Could we be crowned swimming champions for a third year in a row?
The gala began with the 10m races involving our Y3-5 pupils before the Y6 pupils took to the pool for the 25m races. The pupils competed well and there was great success at an individual level with some breathtaking swimming in the Y6 backstroke by Phoebe Darlow, Rhys Colenutt and George Mills. There was also some fabulous front crawl in the Y5 races from James Dobson and Jemma Brown.
The relay races proved to be an exciting affair as always, getting the LJS parents and teachers on their feet!! Our pupils posted some magnificent team results placing 1st in all four races!
Y4/5 boys’ freestyle relay team (James Dobson, Owen Havard, Nathan Berrecloth & Aelfric Lyons)
Y4/5 girls’ freestyle relay team (Jemma Brown, Jenna Townsend, Anya Singleton & Olivia Carlile)
Y6 boys’ freestyle relay team (George Mills, Alfie Crouch, Jack Cornell & Rhys Colenutt)
Y6 girls’ freestyle relay team (Phoebe Darlow, Anya Dix, Anna Kemmett & Bethany Gardiner)
With all the races complete, there was an agonising wait for the team positions to be announced. With fewer top three places than last year, we had our fingers crossed for a top five finish but were amazed to find that we had just beaten Elmbridge to WIN the Y3-5 category! An outstanding result from all our Y3-5 swimmers; each of you contributed to this success! The points were added together for the Y6 races where we were just beaten by Elmbridge into second place. Nevertheless, an amazing effort from all our Y6 swimmers too!
So all that remained was the nerve wracking wait for the point scores to be added together from both age groups to give an overall winner! It was going to be a close call between LJS and Elmbridge; had LJS done enough to win the whole gala? Amazingly, LJS had done it! We had managed to beat our rivals Elmbridge and WIN the whole swimming gala for the third year in a row – an absolutely incredible achievement!!
All of the pupils had a fantastic time, competed brilliantly and achieved some amazing results – very well done to you all and a big thank you to your parents and relatives for their support! A thoroughly enjoyable morning of swimming was had by all and Mr Riley and I were incredibly proud of all of you!
